Application Requirement
Precision control of liquid injection pumps using linear stepper motors
Altair Engineering, a major design firm based in Michigan, aimed to modernize outdated pneumatic technologies in existing beverage machinery. Key objectives included developing a precise, high-speed, and highly customized linear motion assembly while reducing costs and improving throughput. In the food industry, hygiene remains paramount—motion components required food-safe materials due to occasional contact with food products. Additionally, as other parts of the equipment were already designed before motor selection, the new drive motor had to fit the existing enclosure seamlessly, integrate feedback devices, and achieve high-precision, high-speed operation.
• Full Customization Capability: Tailored solutions for motor speed, thrust, and enclosure compatibility
• Life-Cycle Cost Optimization: Design of guide systems and feedback devices prioritized ease of assembly and maintenance
• Food-Grade Safety Standards: Use of high-performance polymers and lubricants compliant with food contact regulations
Facing these challenges, Altair partnered with SXEGL. The first step was ensuring sufficient thrust: a customized 87000-series hybrid through-shaft motor was selected, integrated with a linear guide system to prevent screw rotation while meeting strict cost and space constraints.
SXEGL engineers specially designed and injection-molded a sliding bushing for the screw end, paired with a custom circular guide tube. By modifying the motor’s rear-end mechanical interface, the guide assembly could be quickly connected/disconnected during installation—adapting to the equipment’s compact enclosure without requiring a redesign of the entire housing. "This modular design minimized our client’s engineering efforts while ensuring full functionality," explained Sales Engineer Dan Kish.
To enhance installation convenience, the screw end was machined to fit the client’s proprietary wrench. For food safety, the motor rotor used custom carbon fiber material with food-grade lubricants. The turnkey solution also included two custom pinhole harnesses, with feedback devices and installation parts delivered as a standalone kit to streamline Altair’s assembly process and minimize setup time.
Upon sample completion, SXEGL helped Altair create a reliable, precise liquid dispensing system perfectly suited for food and beverage applications. As Altair’s Chief Engineer Brian Brothers stated, "Our application required a unique, custom solution. SXEGL collaborated closely with us throughout the design process, delivering a final product that exceeded both technical and practical expectations."
